Marriage in India considered as one of the biggest event of once life, full of fun, rituals and excitement. Telugu wedding traditions are similar in all Tamilian families. Tamil matrimony rituals and traditions are unique in their own ways. Tamil wedding is full family affair and whole family is involved in all Tamil wedding rituals. Tamil bride and groom for marriage are generally selected by the parents and once they give their consent, then only marriage date and other formalities are done. One of the important feature of Tamil matrimony is it gives utmost importance to Tamil bride. No religious ritual is considered completed without her participation. Let’s take a look at some of the significant rituals of Tamil wedding.

Nischitartham: This is the formal engagement ceremony. During this ceremony, the wedding date is fixed and declared. It is very important ceremony, where both the families decide upon the wedding. Both the families decide wedding date and exchange the gifts like jewelry, clothes, jewelry, etc.

Pellikuthuru: This ritual is held in the families respectively in bride’s home and groom’s house. In this ritual, close family members smear them with oil and turmeric. This ritual is similar to haldi ceremony of North India. This is followed by a bath and after that bride and groom wear new clothes.

Snathakam: This ritual is generally held in groom’s house. In this ceremony, he is supposed to wear the holy silver thread after taking the holy bath. This is a mark that he is ready to take the wedding vows.

Kashi Yatra: This is similar to Kashi Yatra ritual, which is in the Tamil weddings. In this ritual, the groom pretends he is not ready for the marriage and wants to head to Kashi for a holy pilgrimage and not interested in wedding. He is stopped by the bride’s father and brother.

Mangal Sanan: This ritual takes place on the wedding day morning. The bride and groom takes the holy bath after that they participate in aarti.

Gauri and Ganesh Pooja: This ceremony is generally held in the bride’s house where she offers her prayers to Goddess Gauri and seeks her blessing for successful married life. The groom is supposed to do the Ganesha pooja at the mandap before the arriaval of the bride to ward off the evil spirits and other obstacles.

Jeerakalla-Bellamu: The bride and groom apply jeera paste and jaggery on each-other’s hands from under the curtain. This ritual signifies their inseparable and unbreakable bond.

Kanyadan: This ceremony is performed by the bride’s parents, after washing the groom’s feet they offer their daughter’s and to the groom.

Mangalsutra: The curtain between bride and groom is removed and groom ties the mangalsutra around her neck and ties three knots. Three knots symbolizes their physical, mental and spiritual bonding.

Saptapadi: The tamil bride and groom takes seven rounds around the holy fire while taking marriage vows.
