Sumangali Prarthanai
This puja takes place for the married women. Sumangali means all those women who have been blessed with a prosperous and harmonious married life. As a part of this ritual, puja is performed, and countless prayers are offered to all the Sumangalis. The bride-to-be then seeks the blessings of these married women for a happy and blissful marital life ahead. All the Sumangalis on this day, are supposed to wear a traditional saree of nine yards which is also known as Madisar. Another strange thing is that only odd number of Sumangalis are invited to attend the puja. On the conclusion of the puja, an authentic feast of South Indian food is served on a banana leaf to the Sumangalis.

Pallikai Thellichal
In this ritual, seven earthen pots are taken and are decorated with sandalwood. Then, the pot is filled with a mixture of curd and nine different types of grains. Later, these pots have to be immersed in the water as food for the fishes. This ritual is considered very auspicious for the matrimonial life of the couple since it involves feeding fishes.

Naandi Srardham
This ceremony involves prayers being offered to the souls of the ancestors of both the bride and the groom. The families of both the bride and the groom perform this ritual. Thereafter, the families invite ten or less Brahmins to an authentic feast of South Indian food. The food is lavish, and the Brahmins are also offered paan supari, flowers, sweets, coconut, fruits and traditional clothes or veshti angavastram. The families then request the Brahmins to bless the happy couple.

Nichayathartham
Nichayathartham or the engagement ritual starts with a Ganesh puja that the bride’s family performs. The groom’s family is then supposed to offer the bride several gifts such as jewelry, a new saree whereas the bride’s family offers several presents to the groom too such as new clothes. Then, the bride and the groom dress in the new clothes that the families-to-be have gifted them.

Sumangali Prarthanai: This term Sumangali refers to women who are blessed with happy and prosperous married life. In this ritual, a traditional pooja is conducted and prayers are offered to Sumangalis and the bride-to-be to seek their blessings for a prosperous and blissful married life. These pots are later immersed in the water to feed the fishes. This ritual includes feeding the fishes, it is considered very auspicious for the couple and for their future married life.

Nandi Sharardham: In this ritual, the Tamil bride and Tamil groom and their respective families pray to their ancestors. Both the families invite the Brahmins for the feast. They offer fruits, supari, coconut, paan, flowers, sweets and veshti angavastram (traditional clothes) and request Pundits to bless the couples for their prosperous married life.

Lagan Patrika: It is Tamil translation of wedding invitation. After the engagement ceremony, the wedding date is officially announced in front of the guests. The first wedding card is sent to temple and then distributed to other relatives, family members and friends.

Mangal Sanaanam: This ritual is performed on the dawn of the wedding day in the bride and groom’s house respectively. Haldi, Kumkum and some oil is applied on the bride and the groom before they take this holy bath to get ready for the marriage and perform other wedding rituals.

Gauri Pooja: Amongst all different rituals and Tamil wedding customs, this is one ritual which is performed by the Tamil bride on her wedding day. Once the bride is ready after taking the holy bath, she offers special prayers to Goddess Gauri who is considered a symbol of purity.

Pada Pooja: This is another important ritual before actual wedding ceremonies. In this ritual, the bride’s mother washes the feet of groom with water, chandan and kumkum. After completion of this ceremony, the bride is called in the mandap.

The Sumangali’s who attended the pooja should be in odd-number like 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Once the Sumangali pooja gets over, all the Sumangali’s are treated with an authentic South Indian feast served on banana leaf.

Naandi Shradham: In this ritual, the bride and the groom’s family pay homage to their ancestors. 10 Brahmins or less are invited for an authentic South Indian feast by both the set of families. In this ceremony Brahmins are offered coconut, flowers, paan supari, sweets and veshti angavastram (traditional clothes) and they are requested to bless the couple.

Nichayathartham (engagement): In this ritual the ceremonies begin with performing Ganesh puja by the bride’s family. In this ceremony, the groom’s family offer gifts, saree, jewelry and other things to bride and bride’s family gift the groom new set of clothes. The bride and groom chance the dresses and wear the new clothes offered by other’s family. After that the groom’s sister applies kumkum and chandan tilak on the bride’s forehead and the bride’s brother also perform the same with groom. The bride’s brother offers a garland of flowers to the groom while the groom’s sister does the same for the bride. After complete all these rituals, the bride and groom then exchange rings in the presence of family members, relatives and friends.

Lagna Pathirikai: Lagna Pathirikai in Tamil translates to a wedding invitation. After the engagement ceremony, the wedding date is officially announced in front of all family members, guests and priest.
